Success In All Sizes: Enjoying A Positive Prolight+Sound

May, 2018

Alcons Audio enjoyed a very well-received presence at Prolight+Sound 2018, reaffirming that the company’s pro-ribbon technology is a high quality solution for the smallest audio systems through to the biggest.

A highlight of the Prolight+Sound 2018 was the Production Resource Group (PRG) demonstrations in Messe Frankfurt’s Festhalle, where an Alcons LR28 larger format line array system delivered a stunning soundtrack to the impressive laser, light and video display.

“We partnered with Alcons for our Festhalle demonstration this year, as well as the show-opening Live Entertainment Awards, because the LR28 had already proven itself to deliver exceptional audio quality at highest SPL levels,” says Klaus Rahe, PRG Director Creative Services.

The system comprised 20 Alcons LR28/80, four LR28/110 wide dispersion modules and 18 BC543 very high output cardioid subwoofers. LR7 micro line-array modules and VR8 compact versatile monitors were used as front- and outfills, with RR12 point-source array modules for nearfield. The system was powered and controlled by 24 Sentinel amplified loudspeaker controllers.

“We partnered with Alcons for our Festhalle demonstration this year, as well as the show-opening Live Entertainment Awards, because the LR28 had already proven itself to deliver exceptional audio quality at highest SPL levels,” says Klaus Rahe, PRG Director Creative Services. “We were very pleased with the response of all who visited the Festhalle and for the contribution that the Alcons system made to the experience.”

The response from PRG’s LEA Awards attendees was equally positive, with many mentioning that it was the best sound at the event in recent years.

LR28 video mapping by Jurlights

If Festhalle visitors weren’t already impressed enough, leading Dutch production company (and Alcons LR28 Pro-Ribbon Partner) Jurlights also provided an eye-catching display of video mapping onto the LR28 arrays, which revealed more information, including the interior layout and components.

“We knew that LR28 would deliver a soundtrack that a world leading company like PRG was happy with, but the video mapping added an extra dimension which really drew attention to its presence,” says Alcons co-founder Tom Back. “Jurlights worked through the night to add the video mapping to the system. It helped the audience to understand how a high SPL soundtrack can be delivered with such great quality.”

The response to the LR28 on Alcons stand in Hall 3.1 was equally affirmative while – at the other end of the scale – the launch of the VR5 ultra-compact versatile monitor also attracted a very positive response.
Previewed in February, the VR5 is the first professional audio monitor that features the Alcons patent-pending waveguide technology, which allows any dispersion to be achieved in the vertical plane.

It was highlighted in the demonstrations of live immersive sound technology by Astro Spatial Audio (ASA), which exclusively used Alcons VR5s and BC332 high output cardioid subwoofers.

“It is always a privilege to work with Alcons equipment, because it sounds good straight out of the box. The new VR5 was a revelation, the high-end audio quality, wide dispersion in both planes and its relatively small footprint made it the perfect speaker for our booth this year. Together with the BC332, we were able to create amazingly powerful immersive experiences throughout the show,” says ASA director Bjorn van Munster

“The response to the new VR5 was excellent, with the ASA demos generating a lot of attention,” confirms Tom. “We already have a significant number of orders, which were confirmed after customers heard it at Prolight+Sound.”
