Natural Sound for Sweden’s Iconic Båstad Concert
For the fourth consecutive year, Swedish rental company Electrosound AB has deployed a full Alcons Audio pro-ribbon sound system for the prestigious annual opera concert in Båstad, home of world-renowned soprano Birgit Nilsson. Organized by the Birgit Nilsson Society, the event celebrates the legendary singer’s legacy, drawing opera enthusiasts and classical music experts from around the world to the scenic coastal town.
Renowned sound designer and engineer Lars Wern, known for his expertise in classical music and orchestral productions, once again entrusted Electrosound to deliver a sound system capable of the most demanding task in live audio: reinforcing a full symphony orchestra and opera voices with such transparency and precision that the audience feels as though there is no amplification at all.
“The biggest challenge is to amplify a classical orchestra without the audience feeling like it’s amplified,” says Wern. “At the same time, the sound must travel significant distances outdoors while staying open, natural, and balanced. This is where Alcons truly excels—its ability to maintain resolution and detail at any SPL is unmatched.”
Precision Tools for Classical Excellence
Electrosound has refined the system over the years, evolving from an initial LR18 compact 2x 8” pro-ribbon line-array setup to a larger, more powerful LR24 2x 12” pro-ribbon system with additional components to extend coverage and sonic detail.
“This is where Alcons truly excels—its ability to maintain resolution and detail at any SPL is unmatched.”, Lars Wern, sound designer
The 2025 system included:
- 20x LR24 mid-size line-array modules for the main system, delivering seamless coverage and HF extension beyond 20kHz.
- LR7 micro line-arrays as side hangs to ensure consistent tonal balance in the outer seating areas.
- 8x BF362 MkII subwoofers in a directional end-fire configuration to maximize low-frequency impact while minimizing spill onstage.
- QR36 modular column arrays deployed as front fills for close-proximity seating.
- VR8 and VR12 monitors for artists, ensuring performers experienced the same level of clarity as the audience.
This year, Electrosound integrated a TiMax sound imaging system for enhanced spatial accuracy, for precise localization of orchestral sections and soloists; This, alongside Neumann’s AES67 digital microphone system, ensuring every nuance of the orchestra and vocal performance was captured in stunning detail.
The concert received glowing reviews, including recognition from international opera critics. A leading German opera publication described the sound as “unusually fantastic, with a transparency and balance rarely achieved in a large-scale, amplified outdoor concert.”
“Our Alcons system allows us to maintain absolute clarity and musicality over long distances, and its consistency year after year has proven invaluable.”, Brollan Söderström, CEO of Electrosound AB
With a combination of Alcons’ patented pro-ribbon driver technology, Electrosound’s cutting-edge system design and expertise, this annual concert continues to set a new benchmark for natural, high-resolution sound reinforcement in classical music.
“We consider Alcons our precision tool for making music sound like music explains Brollan Söderström, CEO of Electrosound AB. “The ability to deliver high SPL without introducing listening fatigue is essential in classical reinforcement. Our Alcons system allows us to maintain absolute clarity and musicality over long distances, and its consistency year after year has proven invaluable.”
