Hamburg’s Ohnsorg theater going low on Alcons

April, 2013

Alcons_Ohnsorg_TheaterThe far beyond the country’s borders well-known Hamburg Ohnsorg theater decided for an Alcons pro-ribbon sound system.

In July 2011, the theater left the old venue in the Großen Bleichen and now plays in the Bieberhaus at the Heidi-Kabel-Platz. With the move into the new house, also a new sound system was installed.

As continued in the new venue, the theater values the combination of natural acoustics and neat sound reinforcement; However, the planned musical productions also require a more powerful sound while maintaining high speech intelligibility. Therefore, the sound crew around Florian Buhr (Protones Audiotechnik) decided for the almost invisible LR7 micro line array of Alcons as well as the VR and SR pro-ribbon series from the Dutch manufacturer.

Since the new house with a seating capacity of 414 is acoustically designed, particularly a very natural sound and coherent coverage is highly valued. “The perfect coverage and stunning depth imaging of the system creates an irreplaceable tool that is also easy to operate,” said Florian Buhr. With the Alcons sound system, the Ohnsorg theater effortlessly achieves the desired high level of intelligibility and naturalness for the spoken theater and equally impressive and powerful sound for the musical theater.

As the venue is not a new theater, but to a former office and retail building, the sound system is subject to the architectural limitations. Due to the limited space in the front cross member, a center cluster solution was the only way to largely cover the stalls and balcony. The Stage Systems team from Gelsenkirchen installed a center cluster of 6 x Alcons LR7.

In the frontal stage area 2x VR8 compact monitors (8” LF + 4” pro-ribbon HF) left / right in combination with 2x BF302 (2x 15″) bass systems are used. To easily and effectively achieve the for theater productions important psychoacoustic effects, the VR8 front fills can be also used in stereo.

Furthermore, particular emphasis was placed to the installation of more VR8 monitors as delay speakers for the stalls and the seats under the balcony.

Accordingly, on stage and in the portal several microphones are installed, which can be routed to the delay lines. With an additional 3x SR9 (2x 5” LF + 4” pro-ribbon HF) fill-in monitors below the balcony, also on the rearmost seats optimum speech intelligibility is guaranteed. All systems are operated by Alcons ALC amplified loudspeaker controllers with DDP (Digital Drive Processor).

The Ohnsorg Theater was founded in 1902 by Dr. Richard Ohnsorg as “Dramatic Society Hamburg”. Mid-1950s, the theater managed the leap into German television. With its plays in Low German (“Plattdeutsch”) language, the theater also established a high profile outside of Hamburg. As a future-oriented action, the Ohnsorg theater now makes Low German theater especially for young people since the establishment of the new studio theater.
