Five-Star Sound For Nye Hjorten Teater Trondheim

Five-Star Sound For Nye Hjorten Teater Trondheim

May, 2026

Marking a significant new cultural landmark in central Norway, Trondheim’s Nye Hjorten Teater combines an ambitious programme of musicals, comedies, family shows and dramas within a state-of-the-art 5,000m² venue. Setting a new benchmark in theatrical experience—both visually and acoustically—the theatre selected a comprehensive Alcons Audio pro-ribbon sound system throughout its spaces to ensure a consistent five-star audience experience.

Designed by Skibnes Arkitekter, Nye Hjorten Teater features a main hall with approximately 670 seats and a second, more intimate stage for 100. The theatre’s owners required an audio solution capable of handling the widest possible range of performance types, from amplified concerts and large-scale musicals to intimate spoken-word productions, while maintaining exceptional clarity and coverage throughout every audience area.

“The LR15 was the perfect choice; Whether we’re amplifying spoken dialogue or large musical productions, the clarity and impact are simply unmatched.”, Arnstein Fossvik system designer

“We were tasked with creating a system that not only delivered superior sonic performance, but also matched the architectural integrity of the space,” explains Arnstein Fossvik, system designer and project leader, working alongside Steffen Wevang Karlsen, site supervisor and lead technician. “Alcons’ range of scalable, high-resolution products was the ideal fit.”

The main hall system is centred around a powerful LCR configuration comprising three arrays of Alcons LR15 compact line-array modules, supported by flown BC543 cardioid subwoofers in a central low-frequency configuration. Additional stage coverage is provided by SR9 lip-fill loudspeakers integrated into the proscenium, while QR24 line-source column arrays serve as infill reinforcement. Further LR15 delay arrays and VR5 under-balcony systems ensure even coverage throughout the theatre.

To create a more immersive audience experience, the venue also incorporates CRMS surround loudspeakers, while stage monitoring is delivered by a combination of VR12 and VR8 monitor systems. The entire setup is powered and managed by 60 channels of Alcons Sentinel amplified loudspeaker controllers.

“This system had to overcome several challenges,” says Fossvik. “The main arrays had to be flown higher than ideal because of the venue’s 3D flying system, while the FOH position is located far under the balcony with no direct sightline to the PA. Additional fills were strategically placed to guarantee coverage under the balcony and ensure consistency across all audience areas.”

In the smaller “Lille Hjorten” secondary hall, the system combines VR12 monitors with BF181 subwoofers and VR8 compact monitors to provide flexible reinforcement for a wide range of performances. Elsewhere in the venue, the lobby features VR8 loudspeakers, while the theatre bar utilises distributed VR5 pro-ribbon systems throughout the space. In the venue’s Olgas restaurant, VR5 loudspeakers are combined with a BF121 subwoofer to provide high-quality background music and live performance reinforcement.

Each area benefits from Alcons’ signature pro-ribbon clarity, whether the system is used for background music, speech reinforcement, jazz performances or full-scale productions.

“One of the strengths of the Alcons system is its sonic consistency across different product lines,” Fossvik continues. “From VR5 systems in the restaurant to LR15 arrays in the main hall, the sound signature remains remarkably cohesive.”

Another highlight for the venue’s technical team is the integration of ALControl, Alcons’ remote system management software, allowing comprehensive monitoring, configuration and control of all Sentinel controllers across the venue.

“The LR15 was the perfect choice,” Fossvik concludes. “Its compact size and power output make it incredibly versatile. Whether we’re amplifying spoken dialogue or large musical productions, the clarity and impact are simply unmatched.”
