“Critically listening we all came to the same conclusion that this system was seamless and the intelligibility was nothing short of amazing”
- Eric Rogers (Godsmack, Hunter Hayes, Avenged Sevenfold, a.o.)
“I think this system has one of the most impressive high end of any system I've worked on. It's truly one of a kind. It helps you get 'there' in no time!”
- Dani Munoz (Kali Uchis, Lykke Li, Ricardo Arjona, a.o.)
Michael Larcey, Production Manager & FOH-engineer from MLSound Design, LLC gives a bit of history of the band, how he got involved. Also, he explains the specifics of the O.A.R. music style and how he approaches the sound reproduction in the mix.
It becomes clear why an Alcons sound system was his obvious choice for this tour.
The Alcons systems are being fed by the AES3 digital signal from the Focusrite Rednets; Which get their Dante signal over fibre-optic, from the Directout Prodigy MP. This set-up is used to gather all mixing consoles from the different bands and the DJ.
The Alcons systems are supplied from the inventory of The Ribbon Network; Alcons Audio’s global dry-hire network. Click for more info.
LR24
mid-size line-array module
The main hangs consist of 32x LR24/90 double 12" line-arrays and 4x LR24/120 double 12" line-array.
The LR24 is a mid-size line-array sound system, designed to enable a 1:1 non-compressed reproduction of the original sound source at any sound pressure level; Due to the completely neutral response of the system, it can be used for any application and source possible, including touring and concerts.
The system is characterized by a fully predictable, linear response from the lowest to the highest SPL’s, with a completely flat frequency response up to 20kHz., giving room for full artistic “sound sculpting”, without having to work around or against the system.
LR18
compact line-array module
The outfills consist of 18x LR18/90 dual 8″ compact line array modules, to be used in two arrays of up to 9 units deep. The LR18's are also individually used as front-fill, across the stage lip.
The LR18/90 is a 3-way, compact format line-array sound system, combining the highest sound quality possible with very high SPL capabilities and throw.
The pro-ribbon technology of the LR18 module makes it a very versatile solution. As well as delivering exceptional audio quality and power, its accurate directivity and ease of rigging means that an inventory can easily be used in different applications, including a range of different venues during a tour.
RR12
point-source array module
The front-fills consist of 4x RR12.
The Alcons RR12, featuring the multiple-patented pro-ribbon technology, is ideal for a band on tour performing at various venues. Its modular design allows for tight-packed arrays that ensure controlled sound coverage across diverse audience areas.
The pro-ribbon's natural cylindrical wavefront eliminates the need for distortion-increasing adapters, providing super precise directivity even at the highest frequencies. With a custom-designed 12" woofer and Neodymium motor structures, the RR12 offers a high performance-to-weight ratio, making it both powerful and portable, perfect for delivering consistent, high-quality sound at every concert venue.
BC543
very high-output cardioid subwoofer
The system is supported by 10x BC543 cardioid subwoofers.
The Alcons BC543 subwoofers were the logical choice for the tour, providing high-output, cardioid sub-bass response in a portable setup. With a front and rear woofer configuration and dedicated processing, these subwoofers offer selectable cardioid low-frequency pattern control with up to 42dB rear rejection.
Their design ensures precise sub-bass delivery and excellent stage gain control, even in acoustically challenging environments. The BC543’s innovative features, such as state-of-the-art 18” long-excursion woofers with a large motor structure and carbon-fiber cone, and X-Venting™, maximize performance while minimizing compression, making them ideal for achieving consistent, high-quality sound across different concert venues.
VR5
mini versatile monitor
For accurate monitoring at the FOH position , two VR5 single 5” mini versatile monitors are deployed, joined by BF151 15” subwoofers for reproduction of the lower octaves.
The VR5 is a 2-way mini versatile loudspeaker, specifically designed for near-field applications where ultimate fidelity response needs to be projected with wide horizontal and vertical coverage.
The system brings the typical clear, dynamic and ultra-low distortion Alcons signature sound of the larger LR24 and LR18 systems 1:1 to the engineer.
The VR5 consists of the RBN202 pro-ribbon driver for HF, a 2” version of the 12” and 7” RBN drivers of the LR24 and LR18. For LF reproduction, the VR5 features a 5” mid-bass with Active Coil™ for extremely low-distortion.
VR12
mid-size versatile monitor
The VR12 will be deployed to reinforce the sound for the VIP area. These guests deserve the same crystal clear, dynamic and undistorted sound as the main audience!
Featuring the patented RBN601 pro-ribbon driver, the VR12 is ideal for applications where high output, high quality reinforcement is needed.
The constant horizontal directivity of 90-degrees enables coverage of a wide audience area, whereas the line-source vertical projection ensures also the audience further away gets the “in-the-face” sound experience.
The accompanying 12” features a Neodymium 3” voice-coil motor structure, combining a wide frequency range and high output with low power compression and a lighter weight.
Sentinel10
amplified loudspeaker controller
The Sentinel is the “engine” for the Alcons systems of the tour; A 4-in/4-out dedicated DSP drive processor, with 192kHz capable AES3 inputs (the tour is running all-digital signal), Signal Integrity Sensing™ dynamic cable-length compensation and 4 audiophile amplifier stages totalling more than 10kW of output power.
The touch screen and multi-color encoder control, auto-redundant power supplies, a modular amp/SMPS design and full remote control combine operating convenience with system reliability.
ALControl
remote control software program
ALControl™ is Alcons’ proprietary ALC software program, to control and monitor individual or multiples of Sentinel amplified loudspeaker controllers, that can be accessed from anywhere within a network.
The program features full remote configuration and control of a Sentinel, for gain, delay, equalising, but also input routing, selecting presets (factory and user), custom FIR filter input, a.o. The same functionality is available for assembled groups and sub-groups of Sentinels, with overlay control.
The heart of the LR24 system is the purpose-designed RBN1202rs 12” pro-ribbon transducer. This technology combines an ultra-low distortion with a very high dynamic range.
The all-natural cylindrical wavefront and the patented horizontal projection bring a unique pattern control in both the vertical as well as the horizontal plane, up to the highest frequencies without any complex distortion-inducing horn constructions.
The consistent horizontal dispersion extends the imaging sweet-spot to a larger audience; The ultra-coherent vertical dispersion enables a perfect inter-cabinet coupling for ultimate HF throw and wind stability.
The ear-catching intelligibility and remarkable dynamic headroom reserve is due to the RBN1202rs’s 12" voice-coil with enormous power handling of 2500W and RMS-to-peak power handling ratio of 1:15, from 1 kHz to 20 kHz.
Literally the center-piece of the LR24; the RBN1202rs.
